Pre Conference Workshop B
Adaptive traffic management for evolving mobile networks
Led by:
Jeff Sanderson, Director of Marketing, Bytemobile
Steve Teitzel, Global Solutions Executive, Smarter Networks, IBM
Analyst, TBA
As smart mobile devices become ubiquitous, mobile network operators (MNOs) face a turning point. Networks can become stressed because the exponentially growing demand for mobile bandwidth is unpredictable and transient; users can become disappointed with poor page download speed and videos that stall; and margins can be negatively impacted because of potentially required additional investments in network capacity.
Since mobile networks must operate within defined radio interface and spectrum restrictions, mobile network operators are looking at all areas of potential efficiency gains within the network, and managing network traffic is a critical requirement. With an appropriate combination of “low touch” and “high touch” traffic management methodologies, adaptive traffic management applies the right traffic management techniques at the right time to the users that need it based on policy inputs, user quality of experience (QoE) requirements, and the condition of the Radio Access Network (RAN). This allows mobile network operators (MNOs) to:
- Deliver the highest possible QoE to all users
- Extend the capacity of existing 3G networks
- Control the impact of over-the-top (OTT) video traffic in new 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) long-term evolution (LTE) or 4G (LTE advanced) networks
- Increase revenues
Who will benefit from taking part?
- Network Infrastructure Teams - what approaches are possible and how well they work.
- Network Executives – matching new traffic policies to users, applications and classes of service.
- Value Added Services Teams – moving to segment and priority based tariffs.
- Marketing & Product Management Personnel - looking to balance user demand with network requirements.
